My reasoning is simple enough: protector and guardian show you have completed the storyline in NM and HM respectively, so you have some experience in them, even if it was a long time ago. Skill hunter show you can run most builds, since it is true most builds are focused around one elite skill. Although, I think skill hunter should have been allowed to be account wide because there are certain elites that are a complete waste to have on a certain char, such as Strength elites on a monk.

Im not going to go over all of the other titles that should have never been made, but here is the gist:
Vanquishing is repetitive. It is not about skill, simply about having the time to roll through every zone killing everything. Yes there are certain bosses are slightly more difficult (some rit bosses spike you if you're not careful), but they are essentially mindless grind. Ive gotten leg vanquisher- I know

Cartography involves exploring the sides of zones and "scraping" to get 100% Granted its not that bad compared to the grind of other titles, but it is quite annoying, and im pretty sure a real cartography title would involve mapping the edges (without running intothe walls like an idiot to scrape) and visiting important areas within the zone (a mural of balthazar, etc...).

All in all:
Titles can be a good addition to a game if they indicate content progression, and not "grind." GW titles were added as an afterthought and thus are always associated with some sort of grind, which I believe is the wrong philosophy. My ideal title would be maxed if you simply follow through the storyline missions/quests/sidequests like you're supposed to, without any extra grind necessary. Even though I am close enough to get GWAMM this summer, I really hope that the rewards in GW2 will not be excessive, and I hope they will not be present, or at least have relatively no importance in GW2. This is one consideration I will take into account about buying GW2 if/when it comes out.

Also, no title-linked PvE skills please. That was the worst idea they could have done. Simply a PvE quest to obtain them would suffice. Title discrimination is annoying and should not have a place in any game. Although good luck avoiding that in PvP.

EDIT*

Sorry, but its not elective if you cant get into a grp for UW/FoW anymore without not only a specific farm build (general builds have always been a loose req) but MAX titles to run those PvE-only-skill builds. Nowadays, there arent any FoW/UW pugs unless you get a guild group, so if you want to group, you have to be a hardcore farmer who's already farmed away at maxing a title. And just for the record, I've maxed all eotn rep titles out of personal satisfaction, and that is what they should be for. Not to encourage a group to leave people out who don't have eotn/dont have their lives to waste away grinding.

grind =/= content

grind titles are cheap replacements for content in this game
I find myself strangely agreeing with this post, especially the bolded parts.

However, there should be some meaningful benefit in GW2 for having spent the time to get GWAMM. A title emote/aura, special unique mini, unique armor set, unique weapon and then maybe a special companion upgrade... all things that wont give you any kind of GW2 game-play benefit but that would be nice to have to show for your previous dedication.

I personally like titles that are based on stuff that people were doing before titles came out. i.e. Protector/Guardian, Skill Hunter, Vanquisher, Cartographer, Survivor, Legendary Defender of Ascalon. All of those were done to some extent before titles ever existed just for fun, the title should be more of a bonus then a reason. I'm not a fan of titles that effect game play because well, they effect game play and make people think they need to get them for the benefits. I had some of the most fun I ever had in gw while working on Legendary Guardian and Legendary Skill Hunter and had a real sense of accomplishment afterwords, I ended up getting max sunspear to kill time but I didn't get that same sense of accomplishment even though CoP did a lil bit more damage(woot a skill I rarely use does more damage!)

First And Foremost.

Drunkard. This is possibly the finest title to display. Because it is succinct and directly to the point.
The next level is "Incorrigible Ale Hound". This can just FRO. What is the point of having a sublime title like Drunkard get replaced with a ridiculous "University Student Trying To Sound Clever" title like "Incorriiiriiibluh bluh bluh".

Change it. Either make it so I can display "Drunkard" despite have "Incorrigible crappy mccrap", or change "Inkyblob dog" to say "Wifebeater". Which would be totally imba as far as other titles go.

The only really challenger to Drunkard is "Tragic", and even Tragic would be completely destroyed by "Wifebeater".

Survivor titles should all be changed to "I mapped out of xxxx pug groups and wasted xxxxxx hours of other people's time". Then your account should be banned for that amount time.

As someone stated previously I see titles as 100% pointless and compare them to xbox live gamer score. The only title I care about is my survivor title because it was the first one I maxed, and it was done the real way. Assumed bragging aside, I only work on titles for rewards come GW2. Not that I think the rewards will be much, it's just something to do when I'm bored.

Frankly I think every title but guardian and vanqushing are stupid and skilless grindfests. It's either about how much money you can spend or how many times you can repeat the same flipping farm to get your faction. I hate LDoA the most. It is the epitome of wasted time within a video game. I hate all the PvP titles as even they can be farmed or rigged to streamline the process, making them just as pointless.

The only title I love AND hate is skill hunter. I love the fact that you're encouraged to go boss hunting to get said skills. However, I hate thinking about all that money getting flushed away. I didn't think this game would be so much like Lineage 2 when I first started playing. Yet many things come down to how much money and/or time you have.

Not to sound terribly harsh but Anet should have thought twice when adding in the majority of these titles. Who cares if people get upset and lose interest and leave? I'd rather live in a ghost town than deal with people who think their z-rank actually matters *snicker*

Games were desighned to waste time... Thast all you are doing.. You are not earning money. you are not learning, you are not exploring. you are just wasting time.. so how can you waste time in game if booting the game up in the first place is wasting time.. your wasting time by wasting time ?... What you do in the game thats your problem but you waste time regardless.

I loved Doing all Titles besides EotN titles..

Skill hunter
Vanquisher
Guardian

My Faves becaue i didnt waste any EXTRA time gettign them because they were achieved by gameplay.

The only really fitting reward for a TITLE is surely a title.
I suggest they give GW1 GWAMMs in GW2 a "GW1 GWAMM" title. It's the only really fitting reward they could give... they could do anything I suppose, but I feel than anything other than another title would just belittle the dedication to titles they have shown.

In fact if they make it a max'd title it can count towards your GWAMM title in GW2. Oh yes.

Best remedy against grind is having only one pve character with titles.

Then it would say "I mapped out of ZERO pug groups and wasted ZERO hours of my time because people actually serious about the title will only play solo and with H/H". The AI is your best friend, they are reliable, predictable, don't lag, they won't mess you up.

I have lots of fun playing Survivor characters simply because I really dislike dying. If you think Survivor is a bit stupid in Guild Wars, try Diablo II's Hardcore mode - you don't merely lose out a title, your character is rendered dead/unplayable forever. THAT's hardcore indeed and I played it. Survivor in Guild Wars in kindergarden and all the hate probably comes due to envy from those who don't have or can't put in the (relatively small) effort to get the title.

As for titles in general, I like them, they give a sense of accomplishment.

That being said I don't grind for titles. I just do the ones I like for fun - in PvE, that's Protector, Guardian, Vanquisher, Cartographer, Skill Hunter, etc.

In PvP where titles are almost impossible to max out, I just really PvP whenever I want/feel like playing. They are more like a meter of how far I've gone and that I like to see, not something I plan to max out, ever.

For example, I've been doing RA whenever I have some free time (because it's FUN!) and my Glad rank is still what, 4 (700+ pts). No way I'll max it out, nor I plan to. Same for Hero, rank 3, just HA at times, when invited. Same for Gamer, rank 2, that I only play because Costume Brawls are so damn funny.

Same goes for Kurzick/Luxon, which I have a Rank of about 10 on each without ever grinding for it. 90% of the Faction all came from AB, FA, JQ, and recently some PvE Vanquishes and Missions.

GvG title I never worked on (never will), as I never got into the organized/high-end GvG scene, I prefer the low-end, casual PvP. Same for Hero Battles, I find it lonely and boring, so all I did was play and win 1 match, ever, and never enter again...

As you can see, I feel titles are nice to have and I end up working on nearly all of them, but just for fun and never grinding. I just don't understand why people feel compelled to max them out.

I admit originally I hated the idea of titles and thus ignored them. When most started doing them though, I joined in. As it was something to do in a stagnating game. And for a time it did give pleasure, no matter how "pointless" I thought they were. Areanet were saying "You want new content? There you go!" even without having to deliver physical content to us. So a lot (including myself) proceeded to work towards GWAMM....

And when I got mine last week on my 'lil monk, well whoopdy-doo. Big cheers all round, happy days. Then..... crappenheimer - now what? What do I do now? Progress the Sin to 29(at 19 atm)? Help others again more than likely get towards theirs. But once I achieved it all, it left me feeling flat afterwards. Others may have been this way too, idk.

Titles are the bain of GW, like 'em or loathe 'em.

Pastures new!

Anyway, on a more serious note, lets hope there is no need for (them to add) titles like GWAMM in GW2...

I hate every single one of those damned titles. But since they're in the game, I'm going to get every single one of those damned titles. The ones with functional benefits are the best.

I am in the same situation and just want to say I totally agree to your posting. I just do not want to full-quote it.

I think you are quite right, Cartographer is a nice title to have, but I would welcome if GW2 changes this to a "landmark" based discovery. Hugging walls is insanely stupid indeed.

Ooo I like the idea of discovering landmarks. And in Guild Wars 2, that would be neat because you could look for old landmarks from Guild Wars 1.

I could say WoW, in regard to the Cartography title....and I will

That title is implemented way better in WoW. As soon as you approach an important landmark (like a lake, monument, dungeon and such) the map is revealed for that particular spot. Advancement in that rank isn't in percentage, but displayed as eg. 5/14 places uncovered.

However, I suppose Anet used the way they are doing know because of the instanced nature of GW.
